Easy: ruby has it's own notion of threads; it doesn't use pthreads -
it just context switches inside of the ruby interpreter. I was
concerned about how it would co-mingle with a multi-threaded program
like Manta. If someone has evidence to the contrary, I'd be happy to
reconsider.
