Same thing with linux. Shift + left/wheel/right mouse button enables panning/scrolling/zooming in 2D views.
CTRL + right mouse button places the crosshairs.
Most
interestingly, this also works with filters/tools that hijack the mouse
buttons. For example, the Brush Tool uses the mouse wheel to increase
or decrease the brush radius. Shift + wheel, however, scrolls through
the 3D volume.
Undocumented functionality, AFAIK, but very useful.

Really? When I do shift-right mouse click and drag, I can zoom. This is on a MacBook Pro if that matters.
