The machine that demonstrated the problem is a amd 64 3200+ but running in 32 bit (uname -m returns i686) compiled with gcc 4.1.3

PS: 32bit also didn't work with the intel compiler. So basically, it works only if you get lucky with your compiler.

Oh, so this is only really an issue with a buggy Intel compiler? GCC on the 32 bit mac is fine.
