Oh I feel so dumb, I didn't realize that all it wanted was to create an actual file on disk, somehow I assumed it would just keep it in memory.

Just use the "Load Dataset from File" option under the 'File' menu.
Details are in the user manual under "Importing Data", section 4.VII.f.

I'm not sure what you mean here. Both of the ImageVis3D "citation"
links work for me.

Could you expound on the issue you're seeing?
