[SCIRUN-USERS] Starting SCIRun in OSX

I've had intermittent problems starting SCIRun in OSX. The behavior is as 
follows: I double click the SCIRun application in a Finder window. It starts 
X11 (if it's not already running), then the SCIRun icon momentarily appears 
in the Dock, and then it disappears. SCIRun never starts. Sometimes I am able 
to work around this by opening new X11 terminal windows or closing existing 
windows. Sometimes I have to reboot the computer before SCIRun will start 
again. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a workaround?

Details:
SCIRun 4.4 (though this behavior is reproducible with any version 4.x)
MacBook Pro running OSX 10.6.8
