Ah. I was temporarily confused by the fact that most of the google hits for
QVis concern "an enterprise system for visualizing your business processes":

I thought that perhaps the business world was getting into rotating 3d
flowcharts! :-) I didn't relish the notion of taking tissue images and
mangling
them into something that wasn't really designed for the purpose.
But now I think this must be the answer:

However, the documentation of the format on this page

seems not to specify anything about the order of color values in the file.
Should it be all 4 RGBA values for the first pixel, then all 4 for the second
pixel, etc? Or should it be the red channel for the whole volume, followed by
the green channel for the whole volume, etc?
